The easiest way: combine it with Hagia Sophia
The cistern is 150 metres from Hagia Sophia, so the easiest plan is to book both together. With a combined ticket you come to Sultanahmet once and skip the queues at both.

On your own
By tram (T1)
The T1 tram line runs through the old city and stops at Sultanahmet. From the stop, the cistern entrance is about 240 metres away, around 3 minutes on foot towards Hagia Sophia. It's the simplest option from Eminönü, Sirkeci or the Aksaray area.
On foot from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
If you're already in Sultanahmet, it's a short stroll. The entrance is on Yerebatan Street, right opposite Hagia Sophia and a block from the German Fountain, at the edge of Sultanahmet Square. From the Blue Mosque, just cross the square.

From Istanbul Airport
By public transport, take the Havaist bus to Aksaray and then the T1 tram to Sultanahmet. Allow at least an hour. With luggage, a transfer or taxi to your hotel in the old city is the most comfortable option.
Seeing more of Sultanahmet?
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace are a few minutes' walk away. Guided tours that combine them with the cistern are on Basilica Cistern, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi.
